If it is the front pump or TC tabs - then it is transmission out.

But it only covers 722.118 transmissions - you might have a 722.3 => very different looking.

Because you are getting some sort of feeling of drive when fiddling about with the selector lever whilst being towed that sounds like the secondary pump (at the back of both transmissions) is working so that's why I'm thinking the front pump is at fault.
