Converting M110 (W123 coupe) to electric cooling fan
hi folks,
My 1983 280CE has a seized viscous fan clutch. I've managed to get the fan off and am going to put an electric cooling fan on (either a new one or covert one from another car - I have a spare one from a Porsche 944 that has a similar size engine).
I have 2 questions at this point in the process:
1. Can the shaft the viscous fan clutch attaches to be shortened easily (ie is there a bit of it that can be removed)? I've seen photos where the shaft doesn't extend much beyond the puley, but I'm not sure if this is a different design from mine, or if there's a section of the shaft that extends to the clutch that can be removed. I don't want to go yanking on it if it doesn't come out!
2. I've got a 'spare' mounting point next to the coolant temp sensor on the right hand side of the engine (if viewed from the driver's seat). By 'spare' I mean it's got a bolt head on it at the moment. Would this be a sensible place to mount a sensor to control the fan? Other option is a sensor in the coolant hose leading to the radiator or one put between the radiator fins. Any views.
Thanks - will try to post photos when I'm not at work!
Mike
