Converting M110 (W123 coupe) to electric cooling fan
hi folks,
My 1983 280CE has a seized viscous fan clutch. I've managed to get the fan off and am going to put an electric cooling fan on (either a new one or covert one from another car - I have a spare one from a Porsche 944 that has a similar size engine). I have 2 questions at this point in the process: 1. Can the shaft the viscous fan clutch attaches to be shortened easily (ie is there a bit of it that can be removed)? I've seen photos where the shaft doesn't extend much beyond the puley, but I'm not sure if this is a different design from mine, or if there's a section of the shaft that extends to the clutch that can be removed. I don't want to go yanking on it if it doesn't come out! 2. I've got a 'spare' mounting point next to the coolant temp sensor on the right hand side of the engine (if viewed from the driver's seat). By 'spare' I mean it's got a bolt head on it at the moment. Would this be a sensible place to mount a sensor to control the fan? Other option is a sensor in the coolant hose leading to the radiator or one put between the radiator fins. Any views. Thanks - will try to post photos when I'm not at work! Mike

My w126 no problem getting fan off,Used the bolts with washhers to hold pulley on.As for fan sensor,I attached mine to the upper hose and wrapped with tape, finally alumium tape.I mounted electric fan inside the fan shroud.

Thanks,
I saw a thread somewhere (here I think) where someone had mounted a fan in the original shroud and it looked very neat so think I'll try that. I'm still wondering about the shaft of the waterpump though - I've got the clutch off and the pulley, but I can't see whether there's a section of the shaft that can be removed to make it a bit shorter. Admittedly, this is only really so it looks a bit neater and has a little more room for the electric fan, but would like to do it if anyone knows if it'll work. Mike
