I generally carry my passport, exactly because it gets me in to anything that requires ID (around here anyway), can't be easily scanned and recorded, plus it doesn't contain my address. However, VERY few stores and bars card you if you're buying beer around here. Periodically, the cops give neighborhood merchants a hard time -- they make a show of checking and go back to their old ways after a week.
