I've always fed them up through the bottom, but to each his own. The cluster and panels have to come out regardless.

Glenmore, the trans end is secured by a lone 10mm bolt. There is a clip half way between the trans and floorpan to hold the cable. Re-installing that clip or even a zip tie if broken will go a long way from keeping the jumpy needle from returning. A cable will usually remedy a jumpy needle but clicking is probably in the odometer.
