For future reference. 1. Obviously the carpet mats have to come out. 2. I used two paint can openers to pull the cluster 3. You must take off a plastic underbelly under the dash. This will give you reference as to where the hole/tunnel is to feed the beast. 4. It won't feed from the bottom. I used a thin piece of wire and inserted it down the tunnel,so i knew where to grab the cable. 5. You must lubricate the rubber grommet to get it to squeeze down the tunnel. I ran hot water over it, then put soap on it to provide lubrication. I sort of stuffed it down the hole with a ruler. that's about it. I am back in business. Lee

Lee,
How was attaching the cable at the tranny end? Sounds like this troublesome and possibly the cause of clicking and jumpy needle. Thanks! |

I've always fed them up through the bottom, but to each his own. The cluster and panels have to come out regardless.
Glenmore, the trans end is secured by a lone 10mm bolt. There is a clip half way between the trans and floorpan to hold the cable. Re-installing that clip or even a zip tie if broken will go a long way from keeping the jumpy needle from returning. A cable will usually remedy a jumpy needle but clicking is probably in the odometer.

When I did mine on the 190, i had to feed it from top-down. There were two grommets on the cable where one was larger than the other and wouldn't fit in when I tried bottom up.
I found that it was easier to get to the 10mm bolt that held the cable in the transmission if you lowered the back end of the transmission down. My cluster clicks now too, but thats because I put this bar that had popped out of place on my tripometer. This restored the trip to working condition, but after I got gas I reset it and something must have popped out again, ever since its been clicking as it tries to roll past 0's.

In the past I've remembered posts mentioned "not to do a reset on the fly".
