My SD was smoking lots of black when I first got it, but a Purge completely cleared that up, along with new fuel filters of course. At that point I hadn't adjusted the valves or cleaned the banjo bolt yet, simply the purge cleared up all the smoke it was making. It just heaved out one huge puff of thick black smoke and it never came back, now I purge about once a year.
