Diesel purge through near empty-tank?

I need to do a spring Lubro-Moly Diesel Purge treatment on my w123 300d.

In the past I have done the routine of using a container, running the supply and return lines into it and running the car solely on purge (I usually do two cans of purge at a shot). However I have never driven the car that way, just run it on high idle, stationary.

Ok so a stupid question: why not just wait until the tank is way down then throw in the two cans of purge and actually drive it on the purge?

Too much danger of stirring up crud in the tank?

Or do other folks do this lazy form of purge....

I guess the issue would be either you run out of fuel or the diesel purge gets diluted in the tank and is not as effective as running it under the hood.

So it could work, but probably not as effective as running a tank under the hood.

I purge both our cars from a bottle. Then I add the Lubro-Moly Hit-Test to every other fill-up. Keeps things nice and clean.

I believe that even if you run the tank until 'empty', there will still be about gallon and a half of fuel in the tank.

What is really difficult about running the car off of a bottle anyway?

Nothing really.

My back is sore and nothing is worse than stooping over working in an engine compartment (I am 6ft 4ins so I do mean stooping).

I will just live with the lumpy idle for a week or so until I get my back on track....

Sounds like a reason to buy a car lift to me.

I'm the same height as you so I know how painful it can be slumping over an older Benz waiting for purge to run its course...not fun. I'd say give the diesel giant bottle idea a try, run some lines through the top of a big juice bottle and let it run off that as a mini tank. I've done something similar and gone driving around my neighborhood with purge running the car, sure got the job done a lot quicker.

You mean in general or on my car? In general to flush crud out of the injectors and injection pump. The product is Lubro-Moly Diesel Purge.

My car developed a slight miss at idle. I was able to partly cure it (make it run a bit smoother) by using premium diesel (EDIT: the Shell premium diesel contains injector cleaner) and adding some ATF to the fuel. I also changed the fuel filters. But that has not been sufficient.

during the life of the vehicle, the fuel injector lines, and pumps develop a build up from the fuel. DP cleans up this stuff. SOMETIMES (not often) it'll repair sticky injectors, and solve some nailing issues. more often than not, it's just a general cleaning of the pumps and lines, to give the car a little oomph.

you're the first I've seen in here from Iceland. what area? my father was stationed there in 72 with us, and we stayed until 75. I loved the place. (all the free scampy we could eat ) and as much flounder as we could catch with a pole off the dock (which was a LOT) we traveled the mainland a LOT during the time off dad got. LOVE the fireworks from new years, and the 12 boots of Christmas!

i'm originally from a small town in the south called Hveragerđi, i'm pretty sure you've been there it was a popular place for the troops to visit during days of. Now i live in the Reykjavik area, I can see the old NATO station out my kitchen window.

my last purge I drove it around the parking lot. as long as you secure the bottle (there is plenty of room for it next to the injection pump) and are aware that you have a very small fuel tank you should be fine. I would imagine running the purge at a higher RPM would be even more beneficial.

For the poster who asked why, even though I had no issues with how the engine was running, the purge made it run significantly quieter and smoother.

My SD was smoking lots of black when I first got it, but a Purge completely cleared that up, along with new fuel filters of course. At that point I hadn't adjusted the valves or cleaned the banjo bolt yet, simply the purge cleared up all the smoke it was making. It just heaved out one huge puff of thick black smoke and it never came back, now I purge about once a year.
