The chances of you getting a reliable vehicle with this approach are not very good. It's fun to think about it and talk about it but that is probably where the fun ends. When the check book comes out of the pocket you are probably dangerously close the where the pain begins.

I was recently looking at a 1998 SL500 for under $5000. Hard to beat the fun/dollar ratio, unless you keep it too long.
