The chances of you getting a reliable vehicle with this approach are not very good. It's fun to think about it and talk about it but that is probably where the fun ends. When the check book comes out of the pocket you are probably dangerously close the where the pain begins.
I was recently looking at a 1998 SL500 for under $5000. Hard to beat the fun/dollar ratio, unless you keep it too long. |

I guess the first thought that comes to my mind is why did MB send the W124 chassis to Porsche to install the drive train in the 500E. AFAIK that is the only "factory installed" 500 in the 124 chassis.
I'd go check out a 500E W124 and compare it the to 300CE chassis, engine bay, transmission, etc. My $.02 |

RBTech in Los Angeles could do it, and I think they actually had one in progress down there? It won't be cheap though. There is a LOT of work to stuff an M119 into the 6-cyl chassis, both mechanically and electronically. It's been done but not very often.

He is in Tarzana at 5557A Reseda Blvd just off Ventura Blvd (Reseda Blvd exit off the 101 from anywhere), easy to find, and exceptionally regarded on this and other Mercedes Benz forums. Very easy to find from anywhere: Get to 101 (the Ventura freeway) from anywhere and then take the Reseda Boulevard off ramp, and turn left onto Reseda Boulevard if coming off from the LA (East) side; or if coming in from the the Woodland Hills (West) side, turn right at the bottom of the off ramp onto Reseda Boulevard. Either way, there is just ONE stoplight just ahead where the freeway passes above you. MR MB Motors is just ahead on the next block, after the stoplight and freeway above, right past the gas station and office block ahead on the right. Big faded sign "MR MB Motors" high in the air directs you into the lot. MR MB Motors, 5557-A Reseda Blvd., Tarzana. (if you are driving on Reseda Blvd, and you should run into either Ventura or Burbank Boulevard, you've gone too far, so just make a U turn and go back. MR MB Motors is located betweeen them on Reseda Blvd) (818) 708-8086 is Enrique's phone number. see (for example) http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/california/144503-mr-mb-motors-tarzana-ca.html I am well regarded by him because I am a 500 miles away repeat customer. and there is a reason for this. I had a 300hp euro ECE engine (see sig line below) sucessfully done in November, but that was to replace my stock engine, a US spec engine with 238 hp. I have about 7,000 miles on it. So it worked. Here is the full story complete with pictures. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w126-s-se-sec-sel-sd/1613226-cascade-engine-swap-300-hp-10-a.html
