I guess the first thought that comes to my mind is why did MB send the W124 chassis to Porsche to install the drive train in the 500E. AFAIK that is the only "factory installed" 500 in the 124 chassis.

I'd go check out a 500E W124 and compare it the to 300CE chassis, engine bay, transmission, etc.
