Where in the heck are you from again? I wouldn't keep asking, but your hate of all things American is annoying since you live in NYC on American soil (or so you say). Lets have some info on where you get this hate, and what your nationality actually is.
The design changes are universal in many new cars AROUND THE WORLD based on safety improvements and higher standards.
I agree with Rafi, im not a fan of newer cars. I recently drove a toyota matrix which had the very high beltline we are discussing, and made it very unenjoyable to drive for such a small car.
Get a Miata/MX-5, those have decently low beltlines, and since the generation one, are an absolute blast to drive
