The best place to jack the car is at the made-for-it jack points. The alternative is to use an area, such as the suspension, that normally carries the weight of the car. The same with placing the jack stands.

I definitely would NOT use a cast transmission housing for anything like lifting. Cast housings are made for holding things together, not jacking.
