best jacking points on a w123

So the time has come to do some brakes, rotors, hoses... what is the best way to jack my car up? I've searched the forums but haven't found a concrete answer. I will be working on the front and would like to know the best placement to position the jack as well as the best spot to put the stands. I'm assuming just beneath the jacking holes is a good place to position the jack, but where would i put the mounts? Or should i jack from the transmission or something??

The best place to jack the car is at the made-for-it jack points. The alternative is to use an area, such as the suspension, that normally carries the weight of the car. The same with placing the jack stands.

I definitely would NOT use a cast transmission housing for anything like lifting. Cast housings are made for holding things together, not jacking.

the best is a lift, using the jack points.
next is a floor jack, placed on the STEEL crossmember behind the oil pan up front, or the differential itself in the rear. when I have the vehicle raised, I place the jack stands on the control arm bushings, or on the steel jumction points nearby.

A 3/4" bolt or a piece of bar stock in the jack points work great with a service jack.

You beat me to it.

I was searching looking for a picture of a rod I had seen thet MB offered (or I think I had seen, maybe on E-bay) and copied this from a post I did.

I called Whunter to ask him how do I jack up the rear of the car and mount the jack stands, when removing everything out from under the car. Its just sheetmetal, and nothing solid to have the car sit on.

His reply, was to make some rods to insert into the jack holes for the jack stands to sit on. with this bit of info, and have seen somthing like this on E-bay before, I went to a welding shop to have something made.

we used a piece of 3/4 in steel rod. inserted it into the hole, and left 3 inches sticking out. then the guy made a 15 degree bend to each one so they would be level when sitting on the stands. welded a little plate on the ends, large washer could also be used.

make sure your jack hole aren`t rusted to the point they can`t take the cars weight.

This is a good question. The jack points on W123 have often become corroded, making it a structurally unsound place to jack up the car.

Sincerely, PE

I usually place the floor jack under the crossmember and place jackstands under the frame rails.

Good point, but mine are not rusted.

Each person will have to determine where to safely jack up their car, depending on the structrial condition of the body.
