Looks to me like a dead transmission. (300td)

Turning the corner yesterday, the automatic transmission on my 82 300td finally let loose. Very loose. No engagement in forward or reverse, just some clunking and light grinding noises upon acceleration. I had the world's shortest tow to the street in front of my mechanic around the corner, but I'm guessing this is more than just a B2 piston (my understanding is that reverse would work if that was the case). He hasn't looked at it yet.

I've been having harsh downshifts for awhile, particularly from 2-1. And, on top of that, my parking brake has been inoperable (I know, I know), which isn't healthy, especially when parked on hills. I can't say I was surprised.

Debating putting in a rebuilt transmission, a used transmission, or just junking the car (quite a bit of rust). Anybody know any sources for these things in Oakland or the East Bay?

Thanks,
Marshall
