Some irony in your POV. I think you are correct that the more one focuses on being happy, the less happy you become. Focusing on "self" may not be conducive to being happy.
Let me add, that I enjoy the journey; not necessarily the destination. For example, I had great joy in the process of restoring the Falcon Sprint Convertible, but not so much on OWNING it. My wife could not understand how i could sell it after I completed it. The joy was in the doing.
