Nah, there's no way low fluid will prevent a start (or cause the car to stall). You could dump all the fluid out of the trans and it would still crank and start, makes no sense at all.

On the no crank, given what has happened at this point, I'd still guess the ignition switch.
Normally I would assume it's the starter solenoid due to the no-crank problem, but this wouldn't explain the fact that the car actually quit running. Quit CRANKING yes but not the stall. Plus the cassette style ignition switch is a fairly well-known problem.
