Well if you don't have a magnetic base how about using a strong system of wood clamps / G clamps to hold the DTI in place?

All you have to do is make a rigid base so you get a decent measurement - just make sure you don't make life too difficult for yourself. You need to be able to reach the hub with out tripping over reinforcing struts.
