1st rule:NEVER answer the Front Door.
["Peep" around the Side of the house at the front door,
Eliminate the Threat,
conduct Search for other Bad Actors nearby,
open front door and drag Perp across threshold.
Call Coroner.]
I'm pretty sure that if I were a prosecutor or similar, especially where another prosecutor had been shot in the recent past, no way would I open my front door w/o knowing who was there. A peephole is better than nothing but if it's somewhat dark outside and the house is lit inside, you can usually tell when someone is looking through the hole as it darkens when you put your head up to it. Seems technology could find a way around that limitation, as a murderous creep might just shoot through the door.

Better to have well concealed security video cams at all the doors. They're not that expensive, MUCH cheaper than full time security guards, and would give one a big leg up.

The prison official in CO also opened his front door to his killer, not sure on the full details however.

When I drove cab in Seattle, one big reason I didn't carry a gun was the perp can almost always 'get the drop on you.' There were no security screens in that day, and someone behind you will have you at their mercy if that's what they have in mind. Kinda crazy looking back on it. I was attempted scammed many times but never actually held up.
