SL 129 Steering Quality

I have a 95 SL500 that I've only had for about 2 months. I cannot tell if the dead center mushy feel of the steering is normal for the car or if it's because of the 16" wheels and tires. My ML 430 seems to have less cruiser like steering. I know this is a grand touring car and not an M3 but is this feeling normal.

I also notice that the steering isn't linear. As I'm going around a an onramp and the cornering forces build it isn't very easy to place the car where you want it smoothly as the steering effort changes or is just too cruiser like. Do I need a steering rack from a newer SL, bigger wheels, springs and strut brace, or all of the above?
