SL 129 Steering Quality

I have a 95 SL500 that I've only had for about 2 months. I cannot tell if the dead center mushy feel of the steering is normal for the car or if it's because of the 16" wheels and tires. My ML 430 seems to have less cruiser like steering. I know this is a grand touring car and not an M3 but is this feeling normal.

I also notice that the steering isn't linear. As I'm going around a an onramp and the cornering forces build it isn't very easy to place the car where you want it smoothly as the steering effort changes or is just too cruiser like. Do I need a steering rack from a newer SL, bigger wheels, springs and strut brace, or all of the above?

You might possibly need to replace your steering shock, or have worn out suspension components, like tie rod bushings, but the feel of recirculating ball steering is different than that of rack and pinion.

One of the complaints of recirculating ball is lack of on center feel.

I really can't comment on your feeling that the steering quality is non-linear.

I remember at first that the steering in my Mercedes was unlike any car I had ever driven, and it felt uncomfortable. It took me a while to get used to it, but now after two years, it feels completely natural.
