Two major issues to look for are the front spring perches, and the glow plug issue. Front spring perches can fail due to corrosion that is not evident to the naked eye. As for the glow plugs, they are usually a royal pain to get out without breaking them, which can require major head work to get them out. Some dishonest sellers leave the broken glow plug in the head, and attach the wire from that plug to a second dummy plug grounded to the block so as not to throw a code.
