I have used a HF unit on occasion. It works. Practice on scraps. Use scraps from the part you are repairing if you can't positively match a rod. Get one from a junkyard to practice on and use for scraps.

DON'T breath the fumes.

Three puddles make one puddle for a good weld.

If you don't know why it cracked it might never be trustworthy.
