I'm fortunate to have two good MB friends, one runs a shop and has been a tech for years and the other owns a machine shop and is the biggest detail oriented nitpicker I've ever met.
He rebuilt two Cummins 6bt's for my boat and they didn't even smoke on start.
I guess I will let the decision be made as to whether he plans to finish his 123 or would sell. I'm guessing the motor's a good deal at a few grand if he will do the deal. My other friend will keep a spare 617 at his shop for me and I will then be set for life.

Right on dudes!
Seriously though - if it is a good one from a reliable source I'd go for that. Bear in mind though it is often dodgy buying from friends and relatives if things go wrong. Sometimes the hard feelings are not worth the hassle.
