Yes. It is designed that way. Unlike North American cars of the period, you cannot lock yourself out of a Mercedes by accidentally closing the door with the lock button down.

Next time you would save yourself some trouble by describing the actual behaviour ("Why can't I push down on the door lock with the door open?") and asking the question before you have the car pulled apart .

I suspect you are going to have loads of fun reinstalling that....
