German as a language was flourishing in the United States prior to WWI, however, with the coming of the War and anti-German feelings, the use of the language began to decline. With the advent of WWI, German-Americans almost immediately became the poster children for evil. With the coming of WWI, they were paired with Japanese Americans as the nation's poster children for evil. Somebody has to be blamed for all the crap, right?
