Depending on your state and town laws... For a couple hundred you cna get an air rifle that fires 0.25" rounds with the same power as a .22 They're technically not firearms, so that might be an option. Be smart about it, if you're back to back with other houses don't even try-you don't want a ricochet hitting grandma or one of the neighborhood kids.
If you're in town and you're allowed to trap them trapping and putting them down might be the easiest and most humane way. Don't use leg traps those are terrible.
If you don't want to kill them, I've heard that peeing around your preimiter will keep them away.
