Check the pedal itself.

I just replaced mine (300E) and the part that connects to the linkage was broken. Pedal effort was twice as hard.

$28 at the MB dealer to replace. Works like a charm and took five minutes to change. Had to pull the carpet to get to the pin at the bottom of the pedal.
