Well finally after years of searching I finally took the plunge and purchased a 1984 300D this weekend. It has 144K miles, is nautical blue with blue tex, was owned by the same people for the past 25 years. It has always been a 3rd car so it never saw our horrible salt covered Ohio roads except from the comfort of a garage so yes it is 100% rust free. They even gave me a fat folder of records back to 1992! This color or thistle green are my favorites so I was thrilled to find this just over 110 miles from my home in Cincinnati.
