The adapter plate is best left on. (Besides on an OM61X engine you need to remove the flywheel to remove the adapter plate)

Space the bolts on the stand attachment so you can still turn the flywheel. I've cut up several lengths of 8.8 grade threaded bar for this. Use nuts and washers to space.

Fit the engine stand adaptor to the engine first - don't try and struggle to fit a dangling engine to the stand - you've only then got to get a single tube into a single hole (rather than several bolts into several holes whilst the weight of the engine is fighting you).
