Some caps come with a 'vent hole' but it is really a check valve sort of thing that lets excess pressure out while keeping outside air outside.

The rubber gasket is a good first step in stopping this problem. Check to see if Mercedes sells one to make sure you get the exact fit. These things crack up over the years and some folks think you can get along with out them. Sometimes you can.

And sometimes you can't.
