Not surprising,

A flat style fits the TURBO engines. EVERYONE a 1981 300d is not a turbo engine()M617.912). The flat style replaces the multiple plumbing pieces in a turbo. Non-turbo is a 6-8" rubber tube with two 90 degree ends.
