In some ways I certainly have no love for the company. Still you have to be fair.
In my opinion the statistics indicate you are about ten times more likely to sustain injury in a Toyota than a volkswagon. This I unfortunately believe is possible.
Volkswagon builds a structurally very strong passenger compartment. The competiton not so. At one time long ago they advertised this fact. They soon found that safety does not sell cars or interest new car buyers though.
Also once the competition is about five years old their already much lesser structures have started to corrode. Further weakening them.
Volkswagons factory applied metal anti corrosive coatings inside and out where the best in the business. Inner and outer coatings where about 1/8 inch thick combined from my observation of the wives car after the accident. On areas where the metal is really bent the outer layer of metal separates from the parent metal.
May be thinner now as volkswagon has dropped the twelve year anti perforation warranty. There were some quality control problems with it at the Mexican plant. Maybe production was speeded up.
Ask any large working body shop and they will tell you their cars are tough.
Volkswagon is on the horns of a dilemma right now. They will reduce the market selling prices and also could the quality that buyers may not be aware of. This in the strength and corrosion protection areas. It to me is an area they can save some money without damaging sales.
Volkswagon has been announcing price reductions are coming.
I think it is time to get the wife out of the Toyota and get her into a 2016 jetta with the standard transmission and the new to north America 1.4 twin scroll tubo gas engine.
Simply because I want to reduce the chances of serious injury to her. Mechanically I expect to have more issues with it but that is the lesser of my concerns.
She is not that great of a driver but a wise husband cannot say much. I did not want their diesel anymore nor their obsolite 2 liter gas engine. Or we would have purchased another of their products.
Unfortunatly for her it will be back to a manual transmission but she did well with the last diesel jetta with one so I see no issues. I would not take their automatic even if they threw it in the deal free.
