Depends on where you are. Anywhere in the "rust belt" used engines can be found in good condition as the bodies rust out long before the engine wears out. Nothing wrong with a used engine if the price is right. Say you find a car that is rusted too far to save yet the engine is good. Confirm engine condition with compression test or just take a leap of faith. Even if the car is shipped to you and you have to pull the engine its still a lot cheaper than a reman longblock. Rebuilding can be a good way to go as well but only if you are patient, know what you are doing and have access to a reputable machine shop. Check around at local indy MB shops. Often they will know of salvage cars with the parts you need. They will often give a price on installation and possibly even some sort of guarantee. RT
