Valve adjustment when warmed up.
Drive it like you stole it (aka Italian tuneup) for 500 miles or so.
Re-adjust valves.
Drive it like you stole it at least once a week thereafter.

StarTron diesel fuel tank cleaner (marine supply store) to clean out deposits in tank, IP, and fuel lines.

Adjust the ALDA to increase fuel delivery.
(Some remove the ALDA altogether...I haven't, yet)

Clean/replace the EGR valve and clean out the intake manifold.
(Some bypass or delete the EGR valve altogether...I've bypassed the EGR on my 83 300SD, the 78 300SD never had an EGR valve)

Checking the turbo: disconnect the boost sense line from the switchover valve and hook up pressure gauge (or balloon).
Be careful the plastic boost sense line is brittle ( if original).

Rev the engine and you should get a pressure readng on the gauge (or see the balloon inflate).

If no boost pressure is detected, remove and clean out the banjo bolt of the back of the intake manifold.
The soot from the exhaust gases that the EGR valve introduces into the intake manifold eventually clog the boost sense line and you lose the ability to benefit from the turbo.
