I certainly would leak oil if not connected. Even when connected, it's not the best design-sort of like an inverted funnel. It would probably be worthwhile to renew the o-rings on the nipple before reconnecting.

The separator tube should be secured by a one-bolt clamp down under the turbo. Those bolts tend to vibrate loose and the pipe shakes off the nipple.
