You can try a good sanding and then coating with some polyurethane from lowes or homedepot.

The lights look pretty damn good after that and they remain good for quite a while with the coat. (there are lots of youtube videos on it). Also look for some good bulbs, the downside is that they only last a year.

as mentioned above - the aiming is also crucial.
