2005 e320 Headlight Fix?

The headlight brightness sucks especially in the rain. The drivers side has a new headlight unit the left is original and a bit yellowed. Tried the toothpaste
cleaning with a buffing pad and its better. So short of replacing that unit are there replacement bulbs that would significantly improve the brightness?

You can replace the lenses also. Cleaning the lens works but the factory coating is gone and it will return to yellow eventually.

It's worth checking your headlight aim as well. If the aim is too low or too high, the light pattern will be terrible. The rain is particularly bad if the aim is too high, you won't get much illumination down on the road to help see the surface or markings.

You can try a good sanding and then coating with some polyurethane from lowes or homedepot.

The lights look pretty damn good after that and they remain good for quite a while with the coat. (there are lots of youtube videos on it). Also look for some good bulbs, the downside is that they only last a year.

as mentioned above - the aiming is also crucial.

A toothbrush won't do ****. Wet sand with 2000 grit then buff it out with some generic polishing compound and orbital buffer.

Final step apply some UV resistant wax so it doesn't turn yellow again.

I would start with 800 grit then 1000 and finally 2000 if youre waxing. Stop at 1000 if your gonna UV clear coat.

Back when we had a Sam's Club nearby, I had them do a headlight restoration on the E300 for like $35. Looked perfect when they were done. Really great deal.
