The top of the pump where the delivery valve holder screw into has to be clean enough that when you remove the delivery valve holders crud does not fall inside. Beyond that it does not need to be cleaned.

But nothing wrong with cleaning if you want to.

Measure the height of the delivery valve holders before you remove them.
