At the Naval Ship Yard when a Ship was getting close to a scheduled time to leave and it was not finished you would end up on over time or 3 shifts.
The day shift was the only one that worked normally. The other 2 shifts did less with the same amount of time and that was the same on over time; they accomplished less.
They made over time for 2 guys that had big Families for 3 months so they could get extra money. For those thee Months the Day Shift had to go back and re-do 80% of their work. And, the Forman knew that and let it slide.
Then they found that they had that these 2 guys had taken apart a bunch of engine components to be rebuilt but had boxed the dirty un-inspected parts and of course since they were never inspected replacement parts were never ordered.
Working in Hospitals I preferred the Graveyard shift mainly because you don't need to deal with the Family Members or compete with the other professions. As an example when I was a respiratory therapist I was supposed to test the Ventilator Patients to see how if they had improved or not. To do that you want the Patient un-molested by X-ray or nursing and so on. But, all of the other professions came on duty at the same time you did and also need to see the patient and check things.
As a Security Guard I liked grave yard again because you have less people to deal with and you don't have a Supervisor there trying to micro manage every thing that you do.
At the security guard job the other shifts were supposed to remove the names associated with the temporary badges they issued and had returned. We usually ended up doing their job but of course did not get credit for that.
The evening shift was had a bunch of computer rooms that they were supposed to check partly because there was 3 that the ventilation system failed in and you were supposed to open the doors and use some fans we had to cool them down.
So you would come on your shift and find all 3 rooms over heated. And you would look at the tracking on the Badges of the previous shift and find that they only ever went from the front desk to the Snack Room that had the vending machines and micro wave oven. So you knew that they never were doing their job. And so on.
In short everyone seems to blame the other shift for something.
