Post 2Nd. Shift Blues

Yes, it always gets the shyte jobs but on the other hand, management usually isn't lurking around making it hard to do the actual work .

In the 1980's I worked swing shift for a few years, my son was young then so that hurt but I liked being able to roll up my sleeves and get things done and also do crappy jobs no one on day shift would ever do plus I could play the radio and no one complained .

I also got a lot of " G-JOBS " done in between ~ as long as you to your assigned work no one really cares what else goes on .

Sometimes we'd have a root beer float party on payday when we had a 45 minute lunch period .

My last 5 ~ 6 years on the job they were worried I'd make a stink about a co worker caught embezzling, I'd mentioned it to the supervisor who hassled me then swept it under the rug ~ when the police raided the shop all but -one- employee was questioned (? guess who ?) and shortly thereafter I was transferred downtown where they soon "punished'' me by putting me in a corner in the basement where i could work all I wanted and only talk to others when I wanted .

Point being : like most things in life, it is what you make of it .

In the Navy, working on airplanes, the "night check" works until: the planes are fixed, they run out of parts, or "day check" shows up for work again. Sometimes, that's twelve hours. Sometimes, that's four hours.

I had a college job in the courier office of a bank were I worked from 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. I had a two hour route, and then I'd gas the vehicles, check the oil and coolant, and park them in the order in which they left the next day. That last thing was hard, because they crammed 15 vehicles into a parking lot designed for seven. At 8:30 p.m., I'd drive to the airport to meet an airplane that'd pick up a bag of checks.

I was so organized that I had all the cars parked, gassed, oiled, and watered by 6:30 p.m. So, I had a two hour dinner/nap before heading to the airport. When I got fired, they replaced me with two people.

Post Swing Shift Fun

I can dig it .

If one is smart they learn to work smarter not harder, you'll get much more done and in theory at least, management will be happy .

Where I worked swing shift, if I didn't do things, the day shift just ignored them .

I always preferred the night/late shifts. I had the seniority to pull a day shift, actually worked if for 3 yrs till I met my wife. Hated ever minute of it.

The day shift folks were I worked were older and typically lazier. We got dumped on daily. I still would not trade shifts. I liked the people I worked with. We humped through it and all helped each other and got it done. We had a really good crew.

X2 Only real drawback to second shift is yard work. Many days to wet to do any mowing before getting ready for work. Best schedule ever was called a two two three 12 hr shift 6pm to 6am. First week, worked Monday Tuesday, off Wednesday Thursday worked Friday Saturday Sunday. Next week off Monday Tuesday worked Wednesday Thursday, off Friday Saturday Sunday.

Post Swing Vs. Graveyard

Yeah, I was on the 9 / 80 work schedule for close to thirty years and I liked it .

My son is now on the 4 / 10 schedule, I don't think that or 12 hour shifts are safe .

They call it graveyard for a reason. You wind up there sooner, higher blood pressure, commute to work is alway at night, and we are by nature not nocturnal beings. Is a buck and a half an hour night premium worth it, most wives say yes.

When in school I worked the night shift for a transport company. Good money at the time as it was unionized. Terrible working conditions and I wondered why many of the workers stayed year after year.

I actually got a few things changed and the men seemed to appreciate it. Although I was just one of them. This operation was fairly large and management picked up on the changes. Possibly wondering why nobody had thought of them before.

So they asked me to stay on in another capacity that I had to turn down. This was before deregulation hit the industry.

At the Naval Ship Yard when a Ship was getting close to a scheduled time to leave and it was not finished you would end up on over time or 3 shifts.

The day shift was the only one that worked normally. The other 2 shifts did less with the same amount of time and that was the same on over time; they accomplished less.

They made over time for 2 guys that had big Families for 3 months so they could get extra money. For those thee Months the Day Shift had to go back and re-do 80% of their work. And, the Forman knew that and let it slide.

Then they found that they had that these 2 guys had taken apart a bunch of engine components to be rebuilt but had boxed the dirty un-inspected parts and of course since they were never inspected replacement parts were never ordered.

Working in Hospitals I preferred the Graveyard shift mainly because you don't need to deal with the Family Members or compete with the other professions. As an example when I was a respiratory therapist I was supposed to test the Ventilator Patients to see how if they had improved or not. To do that you want the Patient un-molested by X-ray or nursing and so on. But, all of the other professions came on duty at the same time you did and also need to see the patient and check things.

As a Security Guard I liked grave yard again because you have less people to deal with and you don't have a Supervisor there trying to micro manage every thing that you do.

At the security guard job the other shifts were supposed to remove the names associated with the temporary badges they issued and had returned. We usually ended up doing their job but of course did not get credit for that.

The evening shift was had a bunch of computer rooms that they were supposed to check partly because there was 3 that the ventilation system failed in and you were supposed to open the doors and use some fans we had to cool them down.

So you would come on your shift and find all 3 rooms over heated. And you would look at the tracking on the Badges of the previous shift and find that they only ever went from the front desk to the Snack Room that had the vending machines and micro wave oven. So you knew that they never were doing their job. And so on.

In short everyone seems to blame the other shift for something.
