Grinding it off means you can remover it even it the key is stuck but does not deal with what happens if the insides are broken. However the Steering Colum Lock sill works like that.

On mine I pushed the locking plunger in and filled it with JB Weld Epoxy and wrapped it with tape so it would follow the contours of the part.

The advantage of doing that is that there is less spring tension that the lock tumbler and other parts of the mechanism have to work against. But of course it will no longer lock.
