If New 1980's 300D Steering Colum Locks Gone What to Do?

I have spent at least 45 minutes looking at different sellers and so on and none one has any for sale.

Even if someone wanted to manufacture more of them with the COVID-19 issue that is not likely to happen.

So this seems like the forum to ask what would someone with an internally broken Starring Colum Lock do right now?

Note that I replaced mine back in 2013 and I have no present need. Also note my original one was broken inside in 2 places on different internal components.

Just live without it? It's not a critical piece of equipment, is it?

I am guessing you have not actually had experience with one. There is the Lock Tumbler that connects to the Steering Colum lock innards. You turn the Tumbler and besides unlocking the steering Colum you are also turning a came inside that operates the shut off switch (on diesels without that you would not be able to shut your engine off). Then several inches down is the Actual Ignition switch.

On the later models if from the tumbler on down is not turned to a specific position you cannot even disconnect the Electrical Connector that plugs into the Ignition Switch.

You can remove the Steering Colum Lock and remove the Ignition Switch from it and stick the Ignition Switch back into the connector. At that point you can rotate the Ignition Switch with a Screwdriver. But, you will be reaching under to do that.

Functional but not a good work around. And it presumes you were able to drill out or otherwise remove the Steering Colum Lock and then were able to rotate it so you could disconnect the Ignition Switch Electrical Connector or another way to get the Ignition Switch out is to cut off the area the 3 screws go into that hold in the Ignition Switch.

I know My Wife would not want to have to hunch over and reach under and use a screwdriver to start the Engine and she will not want to open the hood to shut the Engine off manually.

Myself, I just disabled the steering lock by securing it with a pin in the unlocked position.

See the pics of the broken parts of my Steering Colum Lock in post number 6. The shaft that turns the ignition switch is broken off and anther part is broken.

When my new Steering Colum Lock I did disable the plunger so it would not lock the Steering Colum.

Grinding it off means you can remover it even it the key is stuck but does not deal with what happens if the insides are broken. However the Steering Colum Lock sill works like that.

On mine I pushed the locking plunger in and filled it with JB Weld Epoxy and wrapped it with tape so it would follow the contours of the part.

The advantage of doing that is that there is less spring tension that the lock tumbler and other parts of the mechanism have to work against. But of course it will no longer lock.

TBH I have yet to pull the assembly to check it out
but it's the pin that engages the steering shaft that
is my area of concern.

see photo

if the inside of the mechanism is broke I will do my best
to RNE the mount as to retain the factory dash look
minus 2 out of 4 anti theft features

The part that Diesel911 and I both found broken is not the plunger/interface with steering column. Its the end that interfaces with the ignition switch.

My question is about what can you do when your Steering Colum Lock is no good and you cannot get a new one. It is not about how to get the steering Colum Lock out.

The below applies if the innards are no longer working. See attached pic for what needs to be drilled to get the Steering Colum out.

No aftermarket suppliers have them in stock. Pelican has had them back ordered from Valeo since 2018

That is what I thought till I looked for some here is the part number please take a look for yourself A 126 462 07 30, or it is more normally 126 462 07 30 or without the spaces 1264620730.

If you look carefully most will say out of stock. With the ones that did not say out of stock it is unknown.

What amazed me is that eBay had no new one and even used late model ones were not there. I also looked on UK eBay which I have ordered from sometimes.
