Are you mixing up blue plates? Both my 300D's have their original blue/yell letter 1980's CA plates. Those have the upper right well for the year sticker. The plate in your photo is for 1933 with a dark blue background. In those days, one got a new plate every year, instead of today's stickers.

I recall the CA DMV sells prestige blue/yell plates for $50 more, though most people buy the black/yell 1960's-style plates. Indeed, the later have become de-rigur on expensive new cars (Tesla, Audi,...) especially if a black body. They are more stylish than the blue/yell plates.
