Blue California License Plates???
Sorry, not diesel related but...
Has anyone bought vintage blue California license plates for their W123 (or any other car) and registered them through the Year Of Manufacture (YOM) program? Only cars from 1980 or earlier are eligible and obviously the license plate number needs to be cleared through the DMV. I was wondering if anyone on here has gone through the process. It seems pretty straight forward but I have a question. I've read that they send you a little metal bracket to put on the top right corner of the license plate to display the current sticker since both, the original sticker and the current sticker need to be displayed. I think that right corner bracket thingy looks terrible. I've read somewhere that you could get around this by putting the plate with the original sticker (1979 in my case) on the front of your car and put the other plate with the current year and month sticker on the back therefore not having to use that stupid right corner bracket. Does anyone know if this is legal? I would love to get around using that bracket if possible. |

Since a blue plate is still a current plate, putting the present year sticker in the RH sticker well would not attract the least notice from the laws, nor any one else.

That's kind of what I figured too. There are so many blue plates out there that have their original issued blue plates with the original blue sticker covered years ago. How would any know the difference without further investigation. I think putting the plate with the original year sticker on the front will work just fine.

Are you mixing up blue plates? Both my 300D's have their original blue/yell letter 1980's CA plates. Those have the upper right well for the year sticker. The plate in your photo is for 1933 with a dark blue background. In those days, one got a new plate every year, instead of today's stickers.
I recall the CA DMV sells prestige blue/yell plates for $50 more, though most people buy the black/yell 1960's-style plates. Indeed, the later have become de-rigur on expensive new cars (Tesla, Audi,...) especially if a black body. They are more stylish than the blue/yell plates.
