I love my pets, have cats now, but I agree - no way I would spend that sort of money on them. There are too many perfectly good animals being euthanized every day to go all heroic teary eyed over the fate of one of them.

Your story is a good account of just what the mammalian body can do. Hell, reptilian might even be more resiliant, who knows.
