Dogs are incredibly durable

About a month ago we had an incident where our dog (7lb poodle, 14 years old) ran under the garage door just as it was closing. She was too short for the sensor to detect her and the door closed on her. It did reverse when it was about 1" from the floor. She was flat. Save all the drama, vet trip, etc and 2 weeks after the incident it is like it never happened. I reset the sensors very close to the ground. I really thought that was it for her being an old dog. Hopefully this might save someone some with a small dog, child etc. The closing force is high on our operator since the door is rated for high winds.

Thanks. I was sure she would have internal injuries but the vet said it is insidious in that it might take a while to show up. it's been a mo now and all is good.

Exclamation

Many years ago I had a small terrier run into the street and had it's hips run over by an Oldsmobile, shattering his hip and both rear legs like dry chicken bones ~ the Vet said it'd co$t in excess of $4,000.00 to begin, I asked isn't it possible to tape / cast him up and let him heal slowly ? .

I didn't much care if he couldn't run anymore, the $4K meant death to my little dog .

The Vet shook his head but did it and that little smelly noisy yapper lived another 15 years.....

You learn a lot about things like this when on a rural farm where there's no $ for the veterinarian .

Glad you pooch made it through O.K. .

About a year ago she ate something in the back yard and got very sick to where she stopped eating and drinking for about a week. I thought that was it. Again she came through it and in a few days she was back to her old habits.

I love my pets, have cats now, but I agree - no way I would spend that sort of money on them. There are too many perfectly good animals being euthanized every day to go all heroic teary eyed over the fate of one of them.

Your story is a good account of just what the mammalian body can do. Hell, reptilian might even be more resiliant, who knows.

That's a tough one-we love our pets. After one has had a pouch for 14 years you get attached. Hope I don't have to make that decision.

Thumbs up Old Dogs

I only have rescue mutts, two reasons : mutts are always healthier than any purebreds and will have much longer lives to boot .

Rescues tend to bond well and tend to done well, dogs are pack animals and once thy learn who's the alpha male they'll never quit you .

Smaller dogs live longer too, my last sire lasted 20 - 1/2 years and died in mid stride to his water bowl .

I think I had one dog that didn't make 17 years .

Smaller dogs are also easier on your lap when (not if) you le them sleep in the recliner with you .

In nature it's not uncommon to see three legged animals or other serious defects ~ it's Humans who get squeamish , not the dog who survives getting run over by a street sweeper .

The amount of love you get for your dollar on dogs is HUGE .

It is a tough decision near the end of life for family pets. Today you can spend thousands with no real results.

How bad are vet bills locally? You cannot get an appointment without you being vetted locally. Or your past experience with them is on file.

You phone in and they say they will call you back every time. I assume that some people never get the call back.

If they are near the end of their natural time. Suffering from age related issues so they can no longer function. I have the vet put them down.

Never enjoyable but to me part and parcel plus a responsibility of owning pets. All of ours usually live their full life out.

Formal policies on mercy killing of humans are firming up and I approve. Suffering beyond a reasonable point has no possible upside to me.

Post Mercy Killings

Sadly I've had to have a few pets put down over the decades .

I learned early on in life that your animals depend on you, it's not fair to let them suffer .

I've had a few mates who 'couldn't bear' to do it so instead they watched their trusting pets suffer needlessly for over a year...

I remember mercy killings in "Soylent Green" .

' you gotta tell them ! it's PEOPLE ! ' .
