I was able to do it on my W201 but its not super easy, I'd assume you'd have some more room on the W124. I would have preferred not but I had to remove the pitman to get mine replaced. When you do the coupler I had to put the coupler on the steering shaft first and then install the box, otherwise I was collapsing the steering shaft.
