In short, don't. I have an 80 240D that is now a parts car due to the harmonic balancer coming loose. I still don't know what was done to this car previously, but the center bolt is a permanent attatchment to the crankshaft, and there's still at least an inch of freeplay - crankshaft facing is shot.
