I use Rain-X to very good effect, it takes some time and multiple uses before it begins to build up and hide those damn sand pits .

If you're having trouble at night, call around before you choose a new windshield, most are $500 ~ $600 , I use a place in L.A. that's rarely over $250 and they know how to rope in a grommeted windshield .

I've used polishing compound to remove wiper scratches from windshields, once you have the half moons the glass is kaputi so why not experiment ? .
